The performance 'Jazz Mechatronica,' where automated performance robots interact with a jazz band, will take place at three theaters in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province this December.
The 'Jazz Mechatronica' performance, planned and produced by the arts professional group Emotionwave Arts, will be held on the 25th, the 2nd, and the 17th in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province.
This performance is curated to combine the familiarity of traditional jazz—such as standard jazz and creative music from the JM Project band—with pop-jazz original compositions that emphasize popular arrangements. It has been structured so that all family members can enjoy the collaboration between advanced automated instruments and skilled professional musicians.
The specially produced automated instruments include drums, percussion, marimba, electric bass, and acoustic guitar. Among these, the drum and percussion automatic performance instrument parts are equipped with MCUs (Micro Controller Unit) across a total of 34 channels, developed to allow for detailed and specific performances by controlling motors in real-time with a computer.

The acoustic guitar was developed using pneumatic solenoid techniques and 6 servo motors to play all strings of any acoustic guitar quickly and smoothly. The electric bass robot applies a unique technique by integrating a 2-axis CNC precision module based on GCODE, used in the latest 3D printers, enabling faster, quicker performance and allowing for the rich, impactful sound characteristic of the bass.
Furthermore, it is scheduled to feature a high-difficulty live demonstration where an automated performance robot spontaneously responds to the playing of a pianist in real time by applying Google's Magenta and Tensorflow technologies, which are among the machine learning techniques applied to the JM (Jazz Mechatronica) AI system.
In addition to the previously created robotic instruments, there will also be a robotic marimba and a vocal robot included in the live performance to present more diverse and varied music.
The Jazz Mechatronica project was inspired by Patmesni's orchestration project in 2010. It is an art project created with expectations for harmony and a bright future of humans, machines, and artificial intelligence, breaking down the boundary between humans and technology through music, ahead of the historical trend entering the Fourth Industrial Revolution by adding IT artificial intelligence technology to past motor-based robotics technology.
'Robot AI Convergence Music Concert' Jazz Mechatronica will perform its first show at KPU Art Center on November 25th, followed by performances at Neumnae Hall in Siheung City Hall on December 2nd and ABC Hall at ABC Happy Learning Town on December 17th.
