Siheung Art Convergence Project November ~ December Performance The 'Jazz Mechatronica' performance, planned and produced by the art specialized group Emotionwave Arts, will take place in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province in November and December. Four automatic playing instruments developed through collaborative research and development between Emotionwave Arts, Emotionwave, and Korea Polytechnic University are scheduled to showcase the first-ever concert featuring both humans and robots alongside the JM Project Band.
The automatic musical instrument produced for this performance includes drums, percussion, marimba, electric bass, and acoustic guitar. Among these, the drum and percussion automatic musical instrument parts are equipped with MCU (Micro Controller Unit) on a total of 34 channels of instruments, which are manufactured to control motors in real-time with a computer, allowing for detailed and specific performance.

The acoustic guitar was developed to play all strings of an acoustic guitar quickly and smoothly using pneumatic solenoid techniques and 6 servo motors. The electronic bass robot applies a unique technique by utilizing a 2-axis CNC precision module based on GCODE used in the latest 3D printers, enabling deep and percussive bass playing. Furthermore, the JM (Jazz Mechatronica) AI system is expected to feature a high level of performance where the automatic playing robot spontaneously responds to the live performance of a pianist by applying Google's Magenta and Tensorflow technologies, which are among machine learning techniques. In addition, automatic playing marimba robots and vocal robots will be utilized in live performances to present diverse and varied music.
The Jazz Mechatronica project was created with the expectation of harmony between humans, machines, and artificial intelligence, blurring the boundaries between human and technology through music, inspired by Pat Metheny's Orchestrion Project in 2010. It is an art project created by adding IT AI technology to past motor-based robotics technology.
This project performance was selected as a work for the Siheung City Culture and Arts Support Program in 2017 and is sponsored by the Korea Polytechnic University Center for Engineering Education Innovation and the Art Center.
‘Robot AI Convergence Music Concert’ Jazz Mechatronica will begin its first performance at the KPU Art Center of Korea Polytechnic University on November 25th at 5 PM, followed by a second performance at 7 PM. The remaining performances will be held at Siheung City Hall Neumnae Hall on December 2nd at 6 PM, and at ABC Hall in ABC Happy Learning Town on December 17th, concluding with a total of four performances. All seats are 15,000 won.
