Rio Jang (39, photo), CEO of the AI music technology company Emotionwave, said in an interview with the Seoul Economic Daily that they will provide services that go beyond AI composition to include producing albums for 'virtual artists' representing general people or corporations, and assisting through the entire process of music distribution.
Emotionwave's AI engine 'RIMA,' which was self-developed and released in 2018, is equipped with robotics technology that plays actual instruments in addition to composition functions. Using the 'RIMA' technology, Korea's first virtual pianist, 'Hanul,' was born, and a digital single album was also released in May. The album contains 'Green Spirit,' a cheerful piano piece composed by AI. CEO Jang explained, "'Hanul,' who appears as a young man and does not exist in reality, is being hired for performances in virtual spaces as well as at actual public institution events."
RIMA, which has deeply machine learned from about 100,000 songs, specializes in instrumental pieces such as classical, jazz, and Korean traditional music. CEO Jang said, "Currently, most popular music composed by AI still falls short of human level," adding, "However, the characteristic of 'RIMA' is that it does not stop at reprocessing digital music but implements rich sound and overtones by actually playing with robotic instruments."
The instruments handled by RIMA include piano, drums, guitar, bass, percussion, and marimba, and there are 20 songs sold that were played live. They also directly developed driving and control parts such as motors or actuators used for drum stick movements and keyboard playing. Last year, an album collecting the pieces from a Korean traditional music performance created and played by RIMA at an outdoor stage held at Sosan Seowon in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, was released in July.

"A stage where anyone can act as a performer or the main character of a performance, moving between virtual and reality using an avatar, is being created. We will challenge the metaverse (3D virtual world) market with technology that creates not only AI-based composition and performance but also virtual video characters."Rio Jang (39, photo), CEO of the AI music technology company Emotionwave, said in an interview with the Seoul Economic Daily that they will provide services that go beyond AI composition to include producing albums for 'virtual artists' representing general people or corporations, and assisting through the entire process of music distribution.
