Emotionwave is a company founded by artists who are very skilled with technology and engineers who deeply love art. Emotionwave CEO Rio Jang Soon-chul dreams of 'a world where everyone is a creator.'
He constantly contemplates ways to widely spread methods of creating using technology. At the GArtience 2024 Connecting Week, CEO Jang also presented moments and processes of such contemplation.
Q What do you think are the characteristics of your work?
"I majored in computer engineering in college and music in graduate school. When I create any kind of output or make something, I initially thought about these two things separately. Our educational process is divided into music if it's music, math if it's math, and science if it's science."
But when you actually try to create something, there isn't time to distinguish them like that. To achieve a goal, you have to concentrate all means, all knowledge, and all experiences. Ultimately, it is fusion. There's no need to think of it or separate it."
When doing business or making a living through creation, there's no need to think about separating things. For the goal of creating or the business goal you want to reach, you utilize everything. I think these things are important."
Q Was there a moment when you became convinced about the convergence of science and technology with culture and arts?
"It seems like the time I have lived since birth has been a period where IT technology developed very rapidly. As I learned music or technology, they converged and developed very quickly. I think this is not just true for our generation but also for the next generation. It's getting even faster, so the generational gap is larger."
So, looking back at the past, rather than it converging at a certain point, we were already experiencing and feeling it. But I think because we learned this separately within an educational process, we ended up thinking about it in a divided way."
The process of breaking that apart is harder than expected, but to reach the goal anyway, you have to cross this boundary. There were times when I had to struggle and make efforts until the moment came to cross it."

What direction should GArtience take to develop further?
“I think the overall composition of the GArtience event was not bad enough. If we look further, I think it needs to be globalized. Although the brand G-Artiens started in Korea, technology and art are universally applicable globally. I thought it would be good if we could build branches and grow it into a world-class event.”
Q Isn't Tech Art necessary even at actual sites?
“I think it’s very good for networking. People in technology often don't have many opportunities to talk with artists or meet them at events. You either have to go to school to meet people, or there needs to be some case of convergence. Ultimately, you get to know people through someone you already know.”
To expand this, I think there need to be many large and small networking events. If there are many global exchanges, the spread will also be great. Networking is quite important from a business perspective. So, I think it is especially important for global networking to spread.”
Q What goal do you want to achieve through Tech Art?
“It's a repeated story, but we dream of a future where everyone can easily become a creator. I believe that the most beautiful thing for humans is creating something new and leaving it in records. I think pursuing such beauty and having a positive influence is beneficial to everyone and is the most human activity.”
I think that science and technology not only enrich our lives, but art also enriches life. While thinking that perhaps the most abundant human life is one where more people can enjoy this, I continue to move forward.”
