Expected Creation in Traditional Music

Digital Gugak Musician Kim Hwa-ni

Monthly Gongjindan Webzine

The 'AIMPLE,' developed by Emotionwave, an AI music solution company, is an AI-based metaverse NFT entertainment platform that champions digital musician producing. Digital musicians who have revealed themselves through AIMPLE can create music directly with the AI composition engine 'RIMA AI' and perform in online and metaverse environments. The virtual human 'Kim Hwa-ni' is the fourth artificial intelligence musician born from AIMPLE and the world's first digital traditional Korean music (Gugak) musician. Unlike most virtual humans who are female, Kim Hwa-ni is male, has a blood type and MBTI, and even has the occupation of a private academy director. He released his third single album, "Who Made the Sound?" following Fan Dance and Hatta Geosigi Ha-yeo~, and continues to attempt combinations between genres such as reggae, hip-hop, and R&B with traditional Korean music. Although he does not yet have the recognition of other virtual influencers, it seems valid as a case proving that the world of virtual humans can easily access the realm of traditional music.

RIMA AI is designed to compose MIDI sound sources by learning from over 100,000 pieces of instrument performance information and music data, and to perform actual instruments using robotics technology. Kim Hwa-ni has continuously released compositions created through deep learning on various genres of music and Gugak performances using RIMA AI since 2021. This attempt is noteworthy in that it can be an opportunity to discover musical possibilities not previously found. Unlike humans who may be constrained by traditional frameworks and find it difficult to be bold, he might be able to create new music in unexpected forms. Furthermore, it could draw public attention to genres like Gugak, which do not have a wide base. However, since the creation is based on results from deep learning using artificial intelligence, there are doubts about whether it can have a distinct difference from existing music. Ultimately, it will be important to support the development of artificial intelligence that has learned various data to a level where it can possess sufficient discernment and interpretation.

Virtual humans have lower opportunity costs than real humans. They do not need to endure uncertain possibilities or repeatedly prove their talents. All that is needed is to set a talent that everyone will like and add charm. Of course, the variable here is technology. To realize a desired model, corresponding technology and investment must be made. Looking at the current situation where virtual humans have gained popular recognition and are active in various fields, the future of virtual humans seems limitless. While it cannot be stated definitively yet, as VR or the metaverse becomes common, it is natural that people will come to recognize virtual humans. Above all, this trend is likely to appear centering on the younger generation who are more accustomed to digital environments. Therefore, attempts to create public touchpoints for virtual humans and broaden their base of recognition will also be important. They must be able to appeal with charm that everyone desires to gain such attention. There is no difference between a virtual human and a real human.
