Jang Soon-chul, CEO of Emotionwave, said, "I dream of a world where anyone can create and play easily."

Today, we live in the 4th Industrial Revolution era where 'convergence' between different types is key. The 4th Industrial Revolution is not only making human life more convenient but is also bringing great changes to culture. The 'ICT-Culture Convergence Lab,' hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and organized by the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA), is a project where advanced ICT (Information and Communications Technology) meets various areas of culture such as science and technology, medicine, education, manufacturing, art, and sports to create new artistic results. To inform about this trend of change, a session was held to introduce nine research projects from the ICT-Culture Convergence Lab.
AI creates a song from music I hum, and a robot performs it. The day when the future that I dreamed of while watching '2020 Wonder Kid' 30 years ago becomes reality is not far off. This is the technology that Emotionwave (CEO Jang Soon-chul) is researching with the goal of completion in the near future at the ICT Culture Convergence Lab.
EmotionWave literally means a wave that connects the hearts (Emotion) of people to people.
The project EmotionWave is developing in this 'ICT-Culture Convergence Lab' aims to create new cultural and artistic expressions suited for the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution through collaborations between automatic performance robots and human musicians, under the name 'New Player –JM Band'. Furthermore, there are plans to video contentize this and introduce Korean ICT-culture convergence content to the world.
To achieve this, what EmotionWave is intensively researching at the ICT-Culture Convergence Lab is Artificial Intelligence (AI) music technology. In this project, they dream of completing a perfect unmanned concert where robots perform music written by AI, developing technology for AI songwriting.
Jang Soon-chul, CEO of EmotionWave, said, “Our goal is to create new content using artificial intelligence music technology,” adding, “This project is in the process of creating an AI artist, and we plan to release an album and digital singles utilizing artificial intelligence.”
Music has various genres such as dance, pop, R&B, rock, ballad, and classical. EmotionWave has targeted two genres: New Age and Jazz.
CEO Jang was confident, saying, “Seeing this ICT-Culture Convergence Lab project, we thought it would be greatly helpful to our research process,” and adding, “It will be a good opportunity to release our business, which has been under research for three years.”
However, CEO Jang emphasizes that even though they are developing an AI artist, the technology will ultimately be for people. By utilizing this, it can create an environment where even those unfamiliar with making music can write lyrics easily and without pressure.
He explained, “Looking at the history of music creation, when classical music was popular, songwriting was a very difficult and advanced skill that only geniuses could perform,” adding, “At that time, one had to know their own musical theory and rules, but now, as instruments have become smaller and many sound sources are incorporated into machines, composing has become mainstream, with more than half of popular musicians not being majors in the field.”
He added, “The environment has changed with computer technology, leading to the popularization of AI. When EmotionWave's previously introduced robot band 'RIMA' becomes widespread, more people will create without relying on existing creation techniques.”
Although the goal of this project is for AI to compose, CEO Jang emphasizes the importance of the human role. This is because even if AI composes the music, the human role cannot be omitted in this process.
CEO Jang said, “If humans provide algorithms or patterns that people like, AI can analyze them and create songs that many people will enjoy,” adding, “Since an instrument helps with sounds that humans cannot produce, it is about using technology like AI to assist human creation.”
The most difficult part in developing AI has been the financial aspect. Developing artificial intelligence requires high-performance computers, good equipment, research environments, and data. CEO Jang explained that while establishing such infrastructure is difficult for small and medium-sized enterprises, they are receiving great help through this ICT-Culture Convergence Lab project.
CEO Jang anticipates that the greatest effect of this project will be seen in the field of public education. Since RIMA can perform with various instruments, it allows for rich music lessons. He also expects it to help classes taught by teachers who lack ensemble experience or whose available instruments are not diverse. To this end, EmotionWave plans to distribute it to national institutions in cooperation with the Korea Institute of Contents and Culture.
Furthermore, they are opening up paths to enter the Edutech field and pursuing collaborations with related companies.
He concluded by saying, “Through RIMA, if people can handle various instruments and gain ensemble experience, it can greatly improve the popular appeal of music,” and “Our goal is to create a world where everyone can create and easily enjoy music.”
