Robots clean and perform commands given by humans? Stories from sci-fi movies seen in childhood are starting to happen in reality. AI (Artificial Intelligence), called a core technology of the 4th Industrial Revolution, is no longer an unfamiliar existence. It's time to be fascinated by the match between AlphaGo and Lee Sedol, and to have conversations with someone on your mobile phone. This kind of artificial intelligence is seeping into not only daily life but also popular culture. We looked at the presence of AI in popular culture. -Editor's Note-
[Herald Economy Star&Culture Team=Reporter Nam Woo-jung] AI, which was thought to be an unfamiliar existence, was also closely present in popular culture.
Actually, it is not new that the material of AI has appeared in movies. Even in 'Blade Runner' or 'Terminator,' representative Hollywood sci-fi films from the 1980s, robots with human-level intelligence appear. Steven Spielberg's 'AI,' which used the term AI as a title, was novel because it featured robots with emotions. 'Bicentennial Man' and 'I, Robot' are also works that received sensational reactions.
Unlike past works that depicted robots confronting humans, artificial intelligence in recently released works can exchange emotions or even deliver strong messages to human society. The robot police in 'Chappy,' released last year, showed a more mature appearance than humans, and 'Her' shows a human falling in love with an artificial intelligence. Among domestic works, 'Robot Voice,' released in 2016, dealt with AI.
Although 'Robot Voice' was a new movie, it failed commercially, and works featuring the material of AI are hard to find in Korean cinema. On the other hand, recently, works using robots equipped with artificial intelligence are appearing one by one on broadcast television.
The drama 'Boga Mom,' currently airing on MBC, has received praise for its freshness, depicting the story of an artificial intelligence robot named Boga Mom (Park Han-byul), created by a robot developer, who navigates the roles of wife and mother. In MBC's 'It's Not a Robot,' scheduled to air in December, Cha Soo-bin performs a dual role as the AI robot Azi3 and a human character. KBS2's 'Are You Human Too,' scheduled for next year, also portrays the process of an artificial intelligence robot resembling a human adapting to human society. Expectations are building as Seo Kang-joon hints at transforming into a robot male lead.
The music market cannot exclude artificial intelligence services. The AI speaker is the star of this trend, which caused a sensation this year. The AI speaker is also an area where artificial intelligence technology has been rapidly recognized in reality. Since music services are provided through AI speakers, the role of music content platforms has become important. In fact, most AI speaker companies have established links with domestic music content platforms. SK Telecom's 'Nugu,' which pioneered AI speakers in Korea, and Kakao's 'Kakao Mini,' which caused a sales sensation, are linked with Melon from Loen Entertainment, the number one domestic music site. KT's 'Giga Genie' provides services through its subsidiary, Genie Music, and Naver's 'Wave' is based on Naver Music.
Performances featuring both humans and robots are also held. The 'Jazz Mechatronica' performance, taking place this December, will feature a collaboration between an automatic playing robot created through collaborative research and development at Korea Institute of Industrial Technology and a jazz band. Kyobo Book Centre also showcased 'Pepper,' an artificial intelligence robot that recommends books and guides services in the bookstore.
